Dear Pondering,
Protein is essential to building muscle after a workout!  You should have between 15 and 40g/protein within 45 minutes of a workout.  A quick way to do this is by drinking a protein shake or bar.  Or, if you don’t have those handy, you can eat chicken or eggs.  The body can only process up to 40g of protein at one time.  Personally, I always have a protein shake ready to go!  Jay Robb and Isagenix make some yummy kinds!
